Culicchia Neurological Clinic is again sponsoring the annual Brain Injury Association of Louisiana (BIALA) annual conference in New Orleans on March 27-28, 2019 at the Doubletree Hilton in Kenner. The two-day meeting of medical professionals, caregivers and survivors is a great way to earn CEU credits and learn from others involved in the treatment and survival of traumatic brain and spine injuries.
At last year’s meeting, Culicchia Neurologist Charles Fiore addressed attendees and told the story of a 22-year-old man who suffered a severe closed-head injury in a car accident. He was comatose and suffering from seizures and complications. His prognosis did not appear to be good. However, Dr. Fiore told the crowd of rehabilitation therapists that after two weeks in ICU, the young man slowly started to show some improvement…
Dr. Fiore complimented the work of the rehabilitation therapists in the crowd. “He [the patient] eventually began walking, speaking and then caring for himself,” Dr. Fiore said after the conference. “Thanks to the therapists who worked with him, hard work and a little luck, he became independent. As doctors, we plug the leaks and tend to acute medical situations but it’s the therapists who do all the hard work.”
The mission of the Brain Injury Association of Louisiana is to improve the quality of life for individuals impacted by traumatic brain and or spinal cord injury and to advance prevention, treatment, support and education. BIALA maintains a 24-hour hotline and offers resources for traumatic head and spinal cord injury patients. Visit biala.org for more info.
