Unlocking Spasticity

Many stroke survivors are left grappling with the issue of restricted movement due to an increase in muscle tone in their arms and legs. This condition is known as spasticity. It can essentially lock up a patient’s arms and legs, making movement very difficult and sometimes impossible.

Mary suffered a thoracic spinal cord injury that left her paralyzed from the waist down. She was referred to Dr. Andrea Toomer at Culicchia Neurological Clinic for help managing her spasticity. She was having severe muscle spasms that were painful. Her legs were extremely tight due to increased muscle tone. Dr. Toomer recommended implantation of a Baclofen pump. Mary describes the strides she has made since she has received the pump.

Bill C. has been working hard to overcome paralysis in his legs due to an automobile accident. He suffers from severe spasticity and a Baclofen pump was surgically implanted in 2015 to reduce the excessive tone in his legs. Through a rigorous regimen of physical therapy and Baclofen treatment at Culicchia Neurological Clinic, he is making significant progress.
