Culicchia Neurologist Steven Atkins discussed the symptoms and treatment options for Alzheimer’s Disease with New Orleans TV station WVUE Fox8, one day after Singer Tony Bennett disclosed he is suffering from the disease. Dr. Atkins explained that the condition becomes more common as people get older. In fact, Dr. Atkins said 50-percent of seniors 85 years old and over show some signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease
“The first problem people usually run into is loss of short-term memory. They start to … ask questions over again. They’ll forget things they’ve been told. Other common things are getting disoriented. For example, getting lost when driving to a familiar place. People start to misplace things, and sometimes even think other people are moving their things when they just can’t find them,” Dr. Atkins explained.
While there is no cure for Alzheimer’s or medications to slow its progression medication-wise, there are medications that enhance memory and help people function better. Watch the entire inverview here.
