Hearing Aids
Hearing aids are small, battery-powered devices that can amplify sound for many hearing-impaired people. They can be worn inside or behind the ear, and they come in many varieties designed to fit the specific needs of the individual. Using a tiny microphone to pick up sounds, hearing aids filter sound through an amplifier and into a receiver so that the person is able to hear the sound louder and more clearly. People most likely to benefit from hearing aids are those with damage to either the inner ear or the auditory nerve, which can result from such causes as exposure to loud noises, reactions to medication, disease, and old age.
The most effective type of hearing aid varies from one individual to another, so it is important to discuss with one of our audiologists specially trained to custom-fit your hearing device. Culicchia Neurological Clinic’s CNC Hearing and Balance Centers in Marrero and Uptown New Orleans offer a wide variety of hearing devices.
Most hearing aids are non-implantable and can be discreetly worn behind the ear.
These can be further divided by style:
- In-The-Canal (ITC)
hearing aids sit inside the ear canal - In-The-Ear (ITE)
hearing aids are placed in the outer ear - Behind-The-Ear (BTE)
hearing aids are fitted in a plastic casing behind the ear
In some cases, however, implantable hearing aids may be more suitable than these traditional types. Using a surgical procedure, a doctor may fit a patient with either a Bone Anchored Hearing Aid (BAHA) or the newer Middle Ear Implant (MEI). A cochlear implant is another option; this surgically implanted device bypasses the typical hearing processes associated with the peripheral auditory system and stimulates movement in the hair cells of the cochlea to cause the cochlear nerve to send signals to the brain.
Hearing Technology has expanded dramatically with many possible options including Hearing Devices, Tinnitus Devices, Cochlear Implants and Implantable Hearing Devices such as Baha, Ponto, Maxim, Soundbridge and Sophono.
Some hearing aids are Behind-the-ear (BTE), In-the-ear (ITE), In the Canal (ITC) or Completely-in-canal (CIC).
